Natural Disasters in the Classroom: Hollywood versus Reality

PRESENTER: Kevin Furlong, Ph.D.

Natural disaster movies produced by Hollywood can be used to motivate students into thinking more deeply about the causes, consequences, and potential for mitigation of natural disasters. Combining excerpts from these movies with examples of real world disasters and student research into impacts, we are engaging students in the issues of natural hazards. The result is ‘must-take’ course that helps develop students with a lifelong interest and appreciation for the impact of hazards in their lives.
