GROUP DYNAMICS IN A DEPLOYED TRAUMA TEAM

Susan McGroarty, PhD

The literature documents the role of parallel process in psychotherapy. It is well accepted that a group of clinicians observing a group of clients can take on the characteristics of the client group (depressed, euphoric). This presentation examines the impact of working with traumatized populations on the caregiver. Deployment situations will be examined as a particular case of high risk for parallel process compassion fatigue. Risk factors will be described in a didactic format and then a simulation model will be used to better understand those risks and how to manage them. Debriefing from an educational framework will complete the learning experience.
